His leadership provided energy and new ideas that shaped the modern North Carolina as the state found its role in technological development, urbanization and assumed a key national role leading to the 21st century.  After his governorship, he retired and practiced law in Pinehurst, NC.

​The organizers of this speaker series wish to honor the memory of the Governor by examining the current events of today in the Holshouser tradition of unbiased analysis, rational thinking, varied viewpoints, and a calm look at all sides of the issue under discussion.

The legendary state politician reminisces on leading a growing state Republican Party, his inauguration as the first Republican governor in 72 years and fostering economic development during challenging times.

Former governors Terry Sanford, James E. Holshouser Jr., James G. Martin, James B. Hunt Jr. and Bob Scott come together for an enlightening and entertaining panel discussion about serving at the helm of the Tar Heel State. With poignancy, humor and insight, they engage in conversation moderated by Ferrel Gullory, produced PBS North Carolina and the North Carolina Museum of History.
